What are some must-see locations in New Zealand?

A friend is taking a trip to New Zealand soon and I thought I would ask here in case anyone has some cool ideas about things to see there. Feel free to comment on hiking areas, urban areas, restaurants, just whatever. If you put something down, let me know why it's cool! Thanks.

Details:

  1. Franz Josef glacier if your up for a hike and Queens-town if your up for adventure sports
  2. Hells gate or Devils gate I cant remember the name, but that was a cool place its where all the sulphur pits are. It stinks but is cool. Go quad biking aswel there is so much space there to rag the quads. There is an amazing aquarium there aswel which is worth a visit but it depends where he is going.
  3. Rotorua - luge, hot pools, geysers - all this geothermal stuff! Auckland - Kelly Tarltons, the Sky Tower - Shopping: Sylvia Park and Westfield Albany or St Lukes Wellington - Te Papa museum Dunedin - the Cadbury chocolate factory =] check out AA's website for the 100 top things to do!
  4. Must do Waitomo caves ( black water rafting).. Rotorua.. ( Roto-vagus as the locals call it ) too much to list ( need at least 5 days to see all the area has to offer. Skyride and downhill luge rides at Rotorua.. Taupo jet boating (Huka jet) and prawn farm ( great feed)... Wellington museum ( brilliant )... Traditional hungi feast ... Bay of islands , jet boat to 'Hole in the rock"... We spend 3 weeks on the North Is and travelled 2700km and we cut half our itinerary out due to lack of time. As Arnie said We'll be back...
